Arrival & Departure

Arrival

Staff supervision of students begins at 8:50 a.m. For safety reasons, no students are to arrive at school before 8:50 a.m. except for those children who are enrolled in the YMCA PrimeTime before-school care program. Breakfast in the cafeteria, as well as our running program on the school field, begins at 8:35 a.m. Gates are closed at 9:00. Once the gates are closed, students will enter the office. If a child arrives after the 9:05 a.m. bell rings, they will be tardy and will need to get a late slip from the office.

Once instruction begins, it is very disruptive to the class when students come in late. However, most importantly, your child misses out on valuable instruction even if he/she arrives a few minutes after instruction has begun. Please help support your child and our school by making sure your child is in his/her class line before the 9:00 a.m. bell rings.

Student Drop Off

The parking lot gate is closed from 8:50 -9:20 a.m. and from 3:15-3:45 p.m. Adults delivering children to school should park on Melbourne Drive and walk their children onto the campus. Please park legally... do not block driveways, park in red zones, or park in the bus loading zone. Please use the pedestrian crosswalk. Parents are discouraged from entering the school parking lot as there is no turnabout space. However, our parents with Handicapped Placards may enter the parking lot. ONLY VEHICLES WITH HANDICAPPED PLACARDS MAY PARK IN THE HANDICAPPED SPACES. WE HAVE SEVERAL DISABLED STUDENTS AND PARENTS WHO NEED THESE SPACES! PLEASE DO NOT USE THE HANDICAPPED SPACES FOR DROP-OFF! The fine for offenders of this law is $500.

Walking To and From School

Students who walk to school are expected to use the sidewalks and cross at crosswalks. For the safety of everyone, brightly colored crosswalks and signs were installed on Melbourne and Rebecca.  Please instruct your child not to cross in the middle of the block, get out on the street side of the car, or run out between parked cars. Parents can assist in this important safety matter by not calling their children from across the street.

Bicycles

Students in grades 4 and 5 may ride their bikes to school. SDPD discourages this for lower grades. Students must have a lock and helmet. Bikes must be walked onto (and off) campus and locked in the bike rack area on the north side of the library. Students may not ride on campus. The San Diego Unified School District is not responsible and assumes no liability for theft, damage, or loss of use to any bicycle equipment or article left on the campus. All such risk is assumed by the student. Skateboards, skates, and scooters are not permitted.    SCOOTERS, SKATEBOARDS, ROLLER-SKATES/IN-LINE SKATES, OR MOTORIZED UNITS OF ANY KIND are not allowed on school grounds at any time.     Helmets are required by California law. Students not wearing helmets may lose the privilege of parking a bike on school grounds. As defined in Vehicle Code Section 21212, any person under 18 years of age must wear a properly fitted and fastened helmet when riding a bicycle. Helmets must also meet the standards of either the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) or the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).

Dismissal Procedures

Dismissal is at 3:35 p.m. daily except for Wednesdays at 1 p.m. Children must be picked up after school within 10 minutes of dismissal time. Students will be quietly escorted by their teacher to the exits. Please pick up your child promptly as there is no supervision for students after dismissal.  Exception: Students enrolled in after-school programs.  They are not allowed to stay on the grounds as there is no supervision and teachers are in their classrooms working. If at 4:00 p.m. students are not picked up, staff must contact school police in order for them to be escorted home. Please do everything in your power to not allow this to happen, as this puts many people in an uncomfortable situation, but most importantly, your child.

Late Pick-Up Policy

Student Pick-Up

Please meet your child at the front of the school lawn at dismissal. Neighborhood parents are encouraged to park on Melbourne in legal parking zones. Please do not park in red zones or block neighboring driveways. Only cars with handicapped placards will be allowed in the parking lot at dismissal unless prior arrangements for special circumstances have been made with the school administration. Please ensure the safety of all students by not parking in the bus loading area and/or asking your child(ren) to cross the street without adult accompaniment. Additionally, please ensure that your child crosses at the painted crosswalk. Drivers are asked to please drive with caution, and always be on the alert for student pedestrians, especially at nearby intersections, The school's main concern is for the health and safety of your children.

Specific dismissal procedures vary by grade level, as indicated below:

Kindergarten:

Students are dismissed from their classrooms by their teacher upon seeing a responsible adult or older sibling.

Grades 1-5:

Teachers walk all students to the front entrance (lawn area) of the school. All students must be picked up at the front entrance (lawn area) whether they walk home with an older sibling or are picked up by an adult. For safety reasons, students are not to wait on the street to be picked up.

PrimeTime Extended Day Program Students:

All PrimeTime program students are picked up at their classrooms by a PrimeTime staff member.

If you are more than 10 minutes late to pick up a student, please go to the front office to sign him/her out. The office closes at 4:00 and there is no after-school supervision provided for non-PrimeTime pupils. If a student is left after 4:00 pm and attempts to contact a responsible party have been unsuccessful, then staff will contact the School Police or SDPD for support.
